The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) would like to remind Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts that OHV education is now mandatory for unlicensed operators under the age of 16.
This new law was introduced during the 2011 legislative session, when the Idaho Recreation Council worked with legislators to pass SB 1001. The passing of this bill brought a couple of key changes to OHV education requirements in Idaho.
All unlicensed operators under the age of 16, who wish to operate an OHV on National Forest roads, are required to take an IDPR approved OHV Safety Course. The IDPR offered OHV Safety Courses are free and currently recognized by all neighboring states that also have mandatory OHV education requirements. Idaho recognizes OHV education certificates from all other state-issued programs; the certificate must display a state/program logo to be valid.
OHV riders age 15 and under who wish to operate an OHV on roads must be supervised by a licensed adult, 18 or older. The definition of supervision was clarified to mean that if the supervising adult is riding on another OHV, they must be close enough to provide close support, assistance or direction. If the supervising adult is not riding another OHV, they must be within 300 feet to provide close support, assistance or direction.
Register for a free one-day course that includes home study, active rider training and a written test. To register, visit: www.parksandrecreation.idaho.gov and check out the courses and registration materials under ATV/Motorbike.
You may also elect to take the online safety training course for a fee of $30.00. This IDPR approved course provides online certification for ATV, motorbikes and UTVs. Upon completion of the online test, riders are required to participate in a short skills-test administered by an official IDPR OHV trainer. To register for the online safety training, visit: www.atvcourse.com/usa/idaho/.
